Family Session Style Guide

I know that planning outfits for family sessions can be one of the most anxiety-inducing aspects of booking a session.

Aside from whether or not my kids will behave or if the weather will cooperate etc. etc. I have some surefire tips for making sure your outfits not only look incredible on your family but also look good once they’re used in your home.

Family photos hanging on wall of boho modern room

First, look at your home decor for color palette inspo.

You’re going to want to display your photos! So picking outfits that compliment your home decor is an easy place to start when narrowing down a color palette that will work well. I find that lighter, brighter palettes tend to work best with my photo editing style.

Mix colors, textures, and don’t add too much pattern

Typically, I suggest one person with a smaller pattern, one with a larger scale pattern. Natural materials like linen, gauze, and chambray can add texture without introducing new patterns.

Style and Select styling board

Use your personalized styling board to collaborate with me on coordinating your oufits.

When you book a portait session with me, you will get access to this amazing tool where you can plan outifts for all of your family members, narrowing down by style and color palette. I always suggest shopping your own closet when you can, and your styling board can help you see your own pieces in a new way. But if you can’t find anything in your closet, the pros at Style and Select have vetted thousands of pieces of clothing at all price points! Once you’ve created your board, you can share with me so I’m more prepared for your session.
